Unemployment Update no. 2

Here we are with our second Unemployment Update! TL;DR: Still don’t have a job. Let’s jump right into the stats before we start talking about ~feelings~.

  • Applications Submitted: 18

  • Interviews: 0

  • Rejections: 6

  • Response Time: ~7 days

That’s a 3% rejection rate which sounds pretty good but it’s also a 0% success rate if we’re counting a success as getting an interview, which is pretty bad. This job market is wild right now, though. But I graduated in 2008 and I managed to find a job with zero experience, so I remain optimistic. (It was not a GOOD job by any means, but still.)

I should probably mention that right now I’m still swinging for the fences when it comes to this job hunt.

I know I can, I know I can, I know I can…

I’m only applying to roles that are:

  • Fully remote and ideally mention being “remote first”. I’ve been working remotely for the last decade and built my life around having that flexibility and refuse to go back to an office, not even a hybrid situation. The way our childcare is set up I wouldn’t be able to fit in a commute or “butt in chair” hours.

  • Preferably have a salary posted and that salary is more than I was making at my old job. I am working to live, not living to work. Sorry not sorry.

  • Have a Glassdoor score of at least 3.5. If I’m going to work for someone else I certainly don’t want to be miserable doing it.

As I mentioned in my aspirations for 2025 post, I’m toying with the idea of coming up with some creative solutions to make an income rather than a traditional 9-5 situation.
