Unemployment Update no. 4
My deep hatred for cover letters and my ongoing battle with the unemployment office.
Hello, and welcome to another Unemployment Update!
Yes, I am still unemployed. It’s only been a little over a month and I am already tired of this. Searching for jobs, tweaking my resume, and churning out cover letters just does not feel like a valuable use of my time, and yet I have to do it. Both because I need an income and because the state unemployment office requires it in order for them to pay out my benefits.
Not that they’re doing that, since my claim has said “pending” for the last month and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get anyone from that office on the phone. The only silver lining to this nightmare is whenever I do get these benefits approved I’ll have a nice chunk of back pay heading my way.
I’ve called them three times at three different times of day, including one the minute they opened in the morning and I have not been able to get through to an actual human. They don’t even put you on hold. The system just tells you they’re too busy to take your call, and the line disconnects. Truly enraging.
As far as job applications go, it was fairly quiet last week, but I’m writing this on a Monday afternoon, and the rejections are already coming in. It’s disheartening but also expected at this point. It’s time to review my resume and cover letter strategy yet again, I suppose.
